Bile duct adenomas, also referred to as bile duct hamartomas or Von Meyenburg complexes, are benign bile duct malformations. They are composed of dilated intrahepatic bile ductules embedded in fibrous stroma and usually appear as subcapsular or parenchymal nodules < 10 mm in diameter. In general, these lesions do not cause clinical symptoms, but they can cause a diagnostic dilemma when liver metastases are suspected. When found during surgery, a biopsy may be necessary to differentiate between a bile duct adenoma and hepatic malignancies, such as cholangiocarcinoma or metastasis. Treatment is usually not required.
