Acute splenic sequestration crisis (ASSC) is a life-threatening complication of sickle cell anemia that results when intrasplenic sickling prevents blood from leaving the spleen and acute splenic engorgement ensues. Presents with severe anaemia, splenomegaly, acute bone marrow response, erythrocytosis, drop in haemoglobin, pain and circulatory collapse.
