Aminosalicylates

• 5-ASA

    • Mesalazine
    • Sulfasalazine
• Both Metabolised by bacteria to sulfapyridine and 5-ASA
• Decreases synthesis of prostaglandin and leukotriene, modulating the inflammatory response derived from the cyclooxygenase and lipooxygenase pathways.
• These preparations are more useful in UC than Crohns – can be given orally or rectally.
• First line in mild/moderate UC.
