
- Emerge from surface of Medulla as a vertical line of rootlets between the Pyramid and Olive
- Join into 2 roots that enter Hypoglossal Canal in Occipital Bone
- Join in canal and emerge as single nerve
- Exits the cranial cavity via the hypoglossal canal in the occipital bone
- C1 fibres join the nerve as it emerges from the skull
- Emerges between the Internal Carotid and Internal Jugular Vein deep to the Posterior Belly of Digastric
- Hooks around Occipital Artery
- Curves forwards lateral to the Internal and External Carotids and the loop of the Lingual Artery
- Gives off Superior Root of the Ansa Cervicalis as it crosses the Internal Carotid
- Gives off branch to Thyrohyoid (C1 fibres) as it crosses Lingual Artery
- Gives off branch to Geniohyoid (C1 fibres) as it passes forwards on lateral surface of Hyoglossus deep to Mylohyoid to enter the mouth
- Supplies all nerves of the tongue except Palatoglossus (Supplied by Vagus Nerve)
